What are king tides?

King tides are the highest high and lowest low tide events of the year

  • They are regular and predictable events that occur when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in alignment and the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth

  • These condition cause extreme highs and lows during the daily tidal cycle

  • There is a Citizen Science program you can participate with under Resources/Citizen Science. You help document the effects of these high tides to help in planning for for effects of Global Warming

Today is the last extreme low tide of the year, in San Diego around sunset. Go to beach with tidepools at 3:30 and sunset is at 4:46 - plenty of time to poke around the pools and find all kinds of interesting creatures and plants, then enjoy a romantic sunset. Just look - no taking in the majority of tide pools which are mostly part of Marine Protected Areas. Enjoy! And if you miss it today, don't worry! You can catch the next set of extreme high and low tides Dec. 13-15 this year.
